Summary This position is located in National Capital Parks-East, in the Resource Management Department. The typical seasonal entry‑on‑duty period for National Capital Parks-East is December–April but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: Beginning of December . Open to the first 100 applicants or until 11/17/2025 whichever comes first. Duties Follows established procedures and conducts scientifically credible protection, mitigation, and restoration projects to prevent resource damage, to restore/maintain the integrity of critical habitats and native plant and animal communities, and minimize human activities that impact park resources. Develops and maintains effective working relations with related groups, agencies, and the public to encourage cooperative management strategies. Mows park‑managed meadow areas during the approved mowing season (February and March). Treats seasonally appropriate invasive plants with herbicide, preventing regrowth in park priority areas for ecological restoration. Assists natural resource manager with deer management, following approved implementation plan. Requirements U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. Operate government or private motor vehicle as part of official duties; valid driver’s license required. Submit Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record. Wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards; a uniform allowance will be provided. May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work. New employee or supervisor in the Federal government will be required to complete a one‑year probationary period. May be required to travel overnight up to 2 nights per month and obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Must be at least 18 years old, or at least 16 years old and meet one of the high school or vocational training criteria listed below. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of 11/17/2025 unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit, the resume must clearly indicate the nature of duties and responsibilities for each position, including start and end dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part‑time or total number of hours worked. Experience At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS‑04 grade level in the Federal service, obtainable in either the public or private sector. Experience includes assistance in conducting natural resource management projects, following instructions and standardized procedures for field work, collecting and organizing field data, performing routine and recurring testing of biological samples, following quality control protocols, and assisting in the preparation of reports, plans, or guidelines. Must include hours per week worked. Education Successful completion of a bachelor's degree (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) with at least 24 semester hours of scientific or technical courses, such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to this position. Include transcripts. Combination Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Transcripts are required. GS‑06 Grade Level For the GS‑06 grade level, the same experience or education qualifications apply, with an equivalent of one full year of specialized experience. Volunteer Experience Volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations will receive credit for qualifying experience. Physical Demands The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending frequently. Heavy items up to 50 pounds must be lifted and carried routinely. Working Conditions Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and in the field. Field work may involve exposure to extreme weather, terrain, pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals. Laboratory work may involve hazardous chemicals. Rehire Eligibility Temporary seasonal employees must not exceed 1040 combined hours within the National Park Service during a service year to maintain non‑competitive rehire eligibility. The limit can be exceeded through multiple temporary seasonal appointments that collectively exceed 1040 hours, or through a single appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless an exception is granted by OPM.
