Job Description: Mail Clerk 

Location: Lakewood, CO

Position Overview 

The Mail Clerk provides daily support for mail receipt, sorting, delivery, and outgoing mail processing in support of the National Park Service (NPS) at the Denver Federal Center. This role ensures accurate and timely handling of incoming and outgoing mail and packages, maintains accountability for sensitive items, and supports related shipping, receiving, and property management tasks. The Mail Clerk will operate government-furnished vehicles for pickups and deliveries, and is expected to perform duties with minimal supervision while ensuring compliance with NPS security and operational requirements 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Mail Operations 

  • Pick up incoming mail daily from the U.S. Post Office proximate to the DFC. 

  • Sort and distribute incoming mail to designated office mailboxes or deliver sensitive/time-critical mail directly to recipients. 

  • Process and prepare outgoing mail, including metering postage and ensuring timely delivery to the U.S. Postal Service. 

  • Notify the COR when postage machine balances require replenishment. 

  • Maintain accurate logs for mail requiring special handling. 

  • Package & Shipping Support 

  • Receive packages from carriers (FedEx, UPS, USPS), sort, and notify recipients. 

  • Break down pallets, move heavy shipments, and maintain a safe and organized mailroom. 

  • Assist in preparing shipments, applying labels, and tracking deliveries. 

  • Ensure proper accountability for government property included in packages. 

  • Accountability & Security 

  • Identify and safeguard accountable or sensitive property until cleared by NPS property officers. 

  • Maintain signature logs for package transfers. 

  • Immediately report irregularities, unusual mail, or potential misuse of government mail channels. 

  • Follow all physical and data security procedures. 

  • Fleet Vehicle Operations 

  • Safely operate NPS government vehicles for mail and package pickup/delivery. 

  • Maintain vehicles by refueling, checking tire pressure, cleaning, and reporting deficiencies. 

Requirements 

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 

  • Ability to safely lift and move up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. 

  • Valid state-issued driver’s license; completion of government-approved driver safety course required before operating vehicles. 

  • U.S. citizenship and ability to pass MBI clearance and FBI fingerprint check. 

 

Work Schedule

  • Core Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM (excluding federal holidays)
