Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility or Special Education, Certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS), and 1+ years Orientation and Mobility Specialist experience required. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.

A K-12 school in Weaverville, NC is seeking a skilled Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) for a contract position during the current school year (CSY). This role focuses on supporting visually impaired students by teaching essential orientation and mobility skills to promote independence and safety within their educational environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess and develop individualized orientation and mobility plans tailored to students needs.
  • Provide direct instruction in using mobility aids, navigating school settings, and fostering spatial awareness.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and support staff to ensure students full participation in academic and extracurricular activities.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust techniques accordingly to optimize skill development.
  • Maintain detailed documentation and comply with state regulations and IEP requirements.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) or equivalent credentials.
  • Experience working with visually impaired children in a K-12 educational setting.
  • Strong understanding of mobility techniques, assistive technology, and adaptive tools.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills to effectively partner with educators and families.
  • Patience, creativity, and dedication to enhancing student independence and confidence.
