Primary Objective Of Position: Under general supervision, patrols an assigned shift and investigates incidents in the enforcement of law and order in the protection of life and property. Work varies requiring individual judgment within prescribed standards and procedures.
Essential Job Functions: Must possess the ability to perform statutory police work that involves the prevention of crime and the enforcement of traffic laws and regulations; Must possess the ability to analyze a crime scene, interview witnesses, write clearly the findings, and testify in court the results of any investigation; Must be able to obtain the P.O.S.T. Certification within twelve (12) months of employment. Must possess a valid Montana Operator's License.
Physical Requirements: May be required to lift or move in excess of l00#s (greater with assistance); must possess the ability to perform a multitude of physical movements including running, sitting, walking, stooping, bending, talking, hearing, viewing, climbing crawling, and the ability to get in and out of a vehicle. Work may be performed under uncontrollable working conditions such as heat, cold, and dampness.
Major Areas Of Accountability And Performance: Operates an automobile in patrolling an assigned shift for the prevention of crime and the enforcement of traffic laws and regulations; develops and maintains knowledge of Montana, Federal, and Tribal Laws and Codes; responds to radio and telephone dispatches and appears at the scene of disorder or crime; notes and reports traffic hazards; controls traffic at scenes of emergencies; investigates and prepares reports on accidents, offenses, and damages to property; gives directions and information; makes arrests; issues citations; serves warrants and subpoenas; testifies in court; gives verbal warnings; inspects establishments providing alcoholic beverages and entertainment; makes security checks on buildings; transports prisoners; performs initial and followup investigations of incidents involving adults and juveniles; investigates complaints, interrogates persons whose actions are suspicious; impounds and tags evidence; performs related duties as required. May be assigned duty as Drug Task Force Field Agent, School Resource Officer, DARE, equipment maintenance, or to assist the Cadet Program. Initiates routine operational reports; works with information which is generally limited; responsible for equipment and materials requiring minimum servicing and accountability; contacts with the public, fellow employees, and other law enforcement agencies are frequent and requires considerable tactfulness; position requires employee to perform a multitude of movements and occasionally requires moderate physical efforts; on occasion is exposed to unpredictable and uncontrollable physical conditions and requires the use of personal safety equipment and procedures to prevent injury.
