Job Description

This position supports the California Department of Public Health's (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by providing public health laboratory testing identify and characterize mycobacterial, mycotic, and parasitic diseases. Under the general direction of the Supervisor in the Mycobacterial Characterization Unit, the Public Health Microbiologist (PHM) II assists the Unit Supervisor in planning daily laboratory work; uses specialized conventional and molecular methods, develops and applies complex, non-standardized analyses; contributes and follows quality assurance procedures; and performs other functions typical of a State reference laboratory such as technical consultation to local public health and clinical laboratorians, directors, physicians and officials of other State, local, and private agencies. The PHM II is involved in identification and characterization of mycobacteria, including M. tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), performing diagnostic testing for malaria and other parasitic pathogens, and triage of CDC or reference laboratory test reports. The incumbent may provide coverage for drug-susceptibility and fungal testing.

The incumbent works under the general direction of the Supervisor of the Mycobacterial & Parasitic Diseases Reference Unit.

Working Conditions

Telework Information

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework permitted is at the discretion of the Department and is subject to change, consistent with CDPH's Telework Program. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment. Failure to meet this requirement may result in the job offer being rescinded. Travel may be required for this position. The Microbial Diseases Laboratory (MDL) of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) provides reference diagnostic and surveillance testing, and applied

• License/Certification: Candidate mush have a California Public Health Microbiologist Certification issued by the state of California.
• Vaccination recommended. Work performed in high-containment BSL-3 conditions with required use of respirator (N-95 or PAPR). May be tasked to assist other laboratory Sections / Programs in the event of surge or staffing shortage.
