Definition: Performs journey-level sheet metal installation, fabrication, assembly and repair work.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Lays out, cuts, shapes and constructs articles of sheet metal, including black and galvanized iron and steel, tin, copper, brass, zinc, and stainless steel.
  • Supervises apprentices and helpers.
  • Punches or drills holes for rivets, bolts or metal screws.
  • Grinds and files seams, joints and rough surfaces; burrs and turns edges.
  • Fabricates or repairs such sheet metal articles as roofing, gutters, flashing, louvers, ventilators, ducts, hoods, sinks, steam tables, trays, lockers, shelves, fire doors and metal windows.
  • Transfers patterns from blueprints to metal, using scale, compass, divider, prick punch and other layout tools.
  • Fabricates signs, ducts, vessels, etc., from plastics.
  • Solders, welds and brazes.
  • Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites in order to transport the necessary tools, equipment, and materials required to perform the job.
  • Maintains tools and equipment.

Requirements to Qualify:

  • Option I: Completion of a recognized apprenticeship training program* in sheet metal work of at least four (4) years duration.
  • Option II: Five (5) years of experience in sheet metal work in the building trades, one (1) year of which must have been at the journey-level**.

License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.

Applicants for driving positions must submit a clear driver's license copy and their driving record from the CA DMV before final appointment.

Physical Class III - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

  • *Recognized is defined as an approved agency including but not limited to agencies such as the International Training Institute for the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Industry.
  • Applicants who expect to qualify under Option I, must include a legible photocopy of their apprenticeship training certificate. In order to receive credit for the required certification you must include a legible copy of the official certificate at the time of filing or within seven 7 calendar days from the date of filing application. Additional Information:

  • Examination Content: This examination will consist of an in-person interview which will assess Job Preparation, Knowledge and Skills, Problem Solving, and Oral Communication Skills weighted 100%. The passing score for the assessment is 70%.
  • Eligibility Information: Applications will be processed as they are received and added to the list accordingly. Candidates who passed the assessment(s) are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of (12) months. We will use this list to fill vacancies as they occur.
  • Special Information: Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
