Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility or Special Education, Certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS), and 1+ years Orientation and Mobility Specialist experience required. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.

This contract position seeks an experienced Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) to support K-12 students in developing essential skills for navigating their environments safely and confidently. The role is based in Marion, NC, and follows the school calendar year (CSY).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess students mobility needs and develop individualized orientation and mobility plans
  • Provide direct instruction and training to visually impaired students to enhance their independence
  • Collaborate with teachers, families, and support staff to integrate mobility strategies across learning environments
  • Conduct environmental assessments to ensure safe and accessible routes for students
  • Maintain detailed records of student progress and provide regular updates to stakeholders
  • Participate in meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities as required

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) or equivalent
  • Experience working with K-12 students, preferably in a school setting
  • Strong knowledge of orientation and mobility techniques tailored to visually impaired learners
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with students, families, and school personnel
  • Ability to create and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) related to mobility
  • Commitment to fostering student independence and safety
